Each year hundreds of thousands of American tourists go on vacation in a foreign country and do not return. The list for international missing persons is increasingly rapidly as the world becomes more dangerous. Unfortunately, most of these types of cases become international cold cases as well. However, you do not have to be part of these numbers when you travel abroad. There are many ways to ensure your safety while you are traveling to another country. Here are some things you can do to make sure you return home after a vacation abroad:
1. Stay with whomever you are traveling. Do not walk around alone, especially at night. Also, if you traveling with just one other person, it is mostly likely a decent choice to stay in a well lit area and/or more crowded places. This is most likely the most basic guideline, and probably the most ignored as well.
2. Do not go to the residence of someone you don’t know . Even if you think the people or person you meet would never hurt anyone very nice, you should be wary if a person you do not know asks you to come to their home or their hotel room. If you want to go somewhere with people you meet while one your trip, make sure you go to a public place.
3. Do not give someone you don’t know specific information about where you are staying or your contact information in the United States. It is not a terrible thing to tell people you meet along your trip which hotel you are staying at, but do not give them your room number. Also, do not give your first and last name to people you don’t know . You can still be polite by simply saying your first name.
4. It is very important that you are aware of your surroundings at all times, especially during the evening . It is not difficult for human traffickers or thieves to kidnap you or take your things if you look like you don’t know where you are and you can’t see because of the dark. It is also essential to be cautious and have a good idea of where you are going if you are walking around a foreign city at night.
5. It is better for you to keep important documents, like your passport and money, with you or locked up in the hotel safe at all times. If a bad person gets a hold of your passport, you will be an easy target for human traffickers or for identity theft.
6. Finally, look up any safety concerns on a government website, like the CIA or look in a reputable travel book that will tell you any detailed issues in the specific country to which you are traveling.
If you follow these guidelines, you will most likely a happy and safe vacation. To summarize, it is a good idea to stay in areas that have more locals, especially at night, and do not give specific information about yourself or your hotel arrangements with people you meet along your trip. Numerous Americans believe that traveling abroad nowadays is too dangerous; however, if you make a conscious effort to keep yourself safe, there shouldn’t be any problems with your vacation abroad.
